The one I've been into with the local Social Services Mental Health team, was very old and had been gradually closing down for years. It was a cold bare place, one of the original 19th century first asylums, still holding women who were sent their because they got pregnant outside of marriage and have spent their whole lives there. Very gothic on the outside, in desperate need of redecorating within. Extreme lack of facilities and resources. One woman who used to run her own gardening business was ironing tea towels as 'therapy'. Others were learning how to cook rice in a microwave. We sat in on a session where they decide if the person can leave or not. This one woman knew her way around the system well, knew all their tricks. They were incredibly patronising to her. I was rooting for her. The one we'd gone to collect to see her into a kind of sheltered accomodation for young people, wasn't psychologically ready to leave that day. She was so painfully thin and frail and only slightly older than me. It was scary cos she was the same age as my birth sister and had the same name and it could easily have been her. I think it was that that decided me on finding my sister.
