The masochistic personality has very low self-image, shame, shy (princess Diana tended to look to the floor.)Because they can only feel good when others feel good they have a self-interest in making other people feel good and not offending them too. Humbly staying on the fringe of groups would fit with the low profile of masochistic (depressive-masochistic variant) personality. Like dependent personality, masochistic personality belongs to the 'fear cluster' of disorders on axis II.
