His writings are rough, gritty, dark. He's empathetic towards the (lower) middle class people he describes, but at the same time he has enough distance to consider them to be societies losers (and himself a loser as well, he had such low self esteem that he felt very dependent on positive feedback to bolster up his self image).

I would think of Serious Style as most typical for his character, suffering from depression and self-medicating the disorder with alcohol. He got himself very close to the edge (drinking himself to death) but was able to make the right decision and after recovery he enjoyed every new day as a fresh gift.
