Maarten's Conscientious Style (hypocritical, closet gay) boss Beerta wants him to get his PhD, but Maarten rejects this career opportunity, while at the same time feeling resentment towards PhD collegues and the fact that people with PhD are more highly regarded.
Towards the end of the series of novels (and the end of his career) Maarten feels somehow proud of his work at the institute. So he has apparently experienced some personal development.
The writer has done an interesting autobiographical project, since in a series of 9 books (the largest novel ever!) he describes his life from his study at the university to his (fictional) death.
