This Maarten is something of a puzzle, the more you read the more possibilities pop up regarding his main style; Serious Style, Contrary Leisurely Style, Sensitive Style, Self Defeating Style.......
Do you think Maarten could be primary Self Defeating Personality (Self Sacrificing Style)? The novel can be seen as an excercise in exhibitionism, portraying also himself as victim and someone to be pitied.
Maarten often suffers from feelings of guilt and shame. He once said to a begger that he didn't have any money with him. Later he feels regret and starts seeking for the beggar, who is gone now. He feels relieved when he couldn't find the guy.
His detailed descriptions of the interactions and feelings of the people at the office betray a lot of empathy, (not being nice, but being able to accurately sense people's intentions, ' high EQ ' ) I don't think this is so good with these rational, more cold Serious Style people (who often don't have such good memory too).
