First of all, it’s amazing to me that this site still carries on… I’m not sure whether to call you ‘resilient’ or ‘stuck’.
I believe that good relationships are not always honest. Humans roleplay many relationships in real life to a large degree. The internet just creates an environment that exaggerates this natural tendency. I have had a number of good friends on the internet… a few on this site. They are real people in whatever particular manifestation suits them for play… some kind and sincere… some unique and at least interesting… a few outright fucked up. Yet something about the medium is still very impersonal to me.
The strange thing about the internet world is that it is devoid of the objective cues we usually use to discern if someone is telling the truth, lying, or perhaps a little insane. So here everyone is at their word and every piece of information is filtered through the perspective of the writer (and reader). When removed from the physical world, reality becomes even more subjective than it already is and –honesty- breaks down into a somewhat unstable precept. In a way online, consistancy (integrity) replaces honesty and alone builds credible reputation. That’s fascinating to me.
What is also strange about the evironment of a message board is it is at once very public (open to the entire 1st world) and very private (to the point where all interactions take place in one’s head through text). Some people in both camps seem to struggle with this dicotomy particularly.
Ha, so like a 5 I haven’t said anything of much practical relevance. Oh well.
