I am a 40-yr-old 4/3 Soc/sx who has suffered from social anxiety on and off through life. I have been on this Board only a few times so I don't know what you guys think of medication (in other words, don't attack me for what I'm going to say!), but in my early 30s Prozac helped me deal with the social anxiety. Now, since last summer, I have been taking Xanax and that does help, too. But in both cases, social anxiety was NOT the reason I started on either med. The Prozac was for profound (as in burst into tears for no reason in middle of routine day) depression, and the Xanax was for occasional panic attacks that had my heart skipping.
Through my 30s I had some positive group experiences in 12-Step meetings that allowed me to have fun and lose self-consciousness in a group. So now I always fall back on that -- that even if today I get a social anxiety attack, I know it's temporary and I will have times again where I am fine in a group.
