In software (where I worked) it was engineering and sales. Everyone else is there just to help the efforts of those departments. In banking, law, and other professional services like that, there's not as much of a division between the mind-guys and the sales-guys, like margaret says.
Her advice is right on the $$. You will get more respect as a professional when your profession is part of the bread and butter of the company, and not part of what the organization coniders 'second-tier'
