I think that the kinds of music we're all talking about all inspire a certain ethereal quality- you're taken to a different place somehow.
I don't really care about lyrics, like Randy. In fact, I don't really listen to them at all. I'm reknowned among friends for never knowing song lyrics, even if I claim it to be a favourite song! It's more that I lose myself in the holistic 'vibe' of a song, and the feelings that it conjurs. This can be anything from classical to hip-hop to pop to electronic to country and western. I also tend to like songs individually, rather than artists in general, though there are some that always get me- Bjork is one, PJ Harvey another(I almost wet myself when I heard them sing 'Satisfaction' together!!), Coldplay, Radiohead, etc...
Here's another weird musical thing- I can get addicted to just ONE SECOND of a song. The best example I can think of is one particular chord, I think it might even be a mistake, in a version of Jimi Hendrix's 'Voodoo Chile'- it only happens once in the whole song, but absolutely FLOORS me every time.
