If you read Gurdjieff or Tart or Ali or Palmer or some of the more 'mystical' interpreters of the enneagram, I believe they say the idea is to move beyond personal development into the 'transpersonal' realm, which necessarily involves incorporating the more useful aspects of each primary type. It's as though each person is getting a small slice of reality based upon their intrinsic type, but as they develop they ultimately move toward a full 360-degree apprehension of reality.
However they also assert that one's essence is primarily expressed through the talents of their primary type.
